Hyenas like Stoneman and the deranged Sherman set the fire's that still rage and burn through the United States to this day. History should revisit their actions as crimes against humanity.

In our time of politically correct bigotry, waging war on Southern civilians is seen as good and just. It's disgusting.

Dear Sir:

That Stoneman's raid was "ably executed" certainly distinguishes it from the hapless exploits of William T. Sherman, who did little of military value in his meandering slog throughout the Carolinas. All of the details that distinguish your narrative of Stoneman's raid, rapid marches, running battles, capture of military stores, and decisive disruption of Lee's operations are certainly not characteristic of Sherman's lazy prosecution of Southern civilians.

Regards,

Betty,
There's a pretty good 4-part article on the raid, including the foray into Virginia, in The North Carolina Historical Review, volumes 38-41 (1961) by Ina W. Van Noppen.

Both Stoneman and his aide-de-camp, Major Myles Keogh, had been imprisoned for three months in the year prior to this raid. It is little wonder that the destruction of Confederate prisons, especially in Salisbury, were part of Stoneman's 'slash and burn 'agenda.

" I would like to see the Bibliography of the article, "Major General George Stoneman Led the Last American Civil War Cavalry Raid" by Chris Hartley, published in May 1998. Am especially interested in Gen. Stoneman's foray into Jacksonville, Virginia in early April 1865.
