My grandfather, Martin Lynn Patterson was the chief engineer for Sperry gyroscope with an engineering degree from Carnegie Tech, 1912. He is the actual engineer that invented the automatic pilot and I have letters to that affect.
Oftentimes owners of companies take credit for work developed by engineers that have worked for them. Mr. Sperry, although a pilot, did not have an engineering degree, my grandfather did.
Additionally my grandfather was responsible for the development of the first nigiht flying system, a series of high powered lights that allowed pilots to follow the lights from one location to the next. I also have the photo album with my grandfather assisting in the christening of the Sperry Sub tender as he was involved in the engineering of that as well. The most prestigious scholarship at Carnegie Mellon University is in my grandfathers name, Martin Lynn Patterson, awarded to an engineering student each year. His fellow friends, including Eddie Rickenbacker, developed this scholarship in his name for his contribution to the aerospace industry. Eddie was a personal friend of my grandfather. It's a shame the engineers that did the actual work do not get the credit they deserve.
Sperry named their library in my grandfathers name as well and he was awarded the Colliers award. Unfortunately he died in an airplane crash on his way back to Brooklyn after christening the Sperry.

The messenger was designed by Alfred Verville at McCook Field. Sperry was low bidder on a contract to build 50 odd. It was under powered, and had a very bad safety record. The army retired it and destroyed the lot of them.

Lawrence Sperry was Elmer Sperry's second son. They were, in order, Edward G., Lawrence B., and Elmer A. All were active in their fathers work.
