Spikes was a friend of mine when we trained at Ft. Benning when the 11th Air Assault was getting going from 1963-65. Another account of LZ Hereford was written by SLA Marshal in "Battles in the Monsoon" which described the overrun at LZ Hereford. Several years after I came home from Nam I read of Spikes death in that book one evening..had no idea he was killed but to this day the thought brings me great sorrow. A. V. We didn't know they had been overrun by NVA. We saw dead US Soldiers. Estes quickly took the flight controls and made a go-around. We called Axle 3 at LZ Savoy and reported what we had seen. Next, our gunships and ARA shot-up the area followed by Artillery and USAF F-4's later in the day. I didn't know that anyone in the mortar platoon had survived ... until today.
