John;

I knew Fred and quite a few of the Commandos. I am frequently in contact with Ron Moyse. A great lot and greater warriors.

Dear Ted;

It was a shame what happened to your cousin and many others on Task Force Drysdale. I often questioned the wisdom of including service troops on such a perilous mission that was fraught with so much danger. Just review how much trouble 41 Commando had of completing this mission and you will understand what I mean.

Best wishes

I was the Heavy Weapons Officer of 41 Independent Commando Royal Marines and my CO, Lt Col D B Drysdale, commanded the reinforcement column from Kotori to Hagaruri. When he was wounded he handed command to Carl Sitter the OC of G/3/1 who led his Coy, the USMC tanks and the Rifle Tps of 41 into Hagaruri. I brought the last two vehicles of the Task Force in although Cpl Cruse of mine brought the survivors of his Section in the next day. Although Task Force DRYSDALE sustained 321 casualties and lost 75 vehicles "to the slender garrison of Hagaruri was added a tank company and some 300 seasoned infantry".
B/3/31st Infantry US Army was part of the column travelling behind 41 Commando They were cut off and fought through the night with our survivors under command of Maj Mclaughlan USMC before surrendering at dawn due to casualties and shortage of ammunition. I have heard that they displayed courage particularly those firing a recoilless rifle. I understand from survivors that their officer took refuge in a foxhole and would not come out to give orders to his SNCOs.
I have not seen the preceding articles and can only confirm what Mr Barbula has written.

y father was in Peckham's company, it probalbly should hae been called the death of B company. Sure, Smith thought it was successful because it reinforced and saved marines.

I was a machinegun squad leader with George Company and disagree with a lot of what has been reported in this report. The main item is "Death of Task Force Drysdale." The task force was formed to get reinforcements to Hagaru, mainly George Company.

This was accomplished and added about 350 frontline troops and 16 tanks to the defense of Hagaru.

After fighting all day on the MSR between Koto-ri and Hagaru, George Company attacked and held East Hill the next morning.

Task Force Drysdale had casualties but their mission was accomplished and help save the 1st Marine Division. It did not die.
