Just found this site. WOW ! Bull Durham,What a guy.! !
First off he was an Enlisted mans Officer A-One,over the top type GI Allways happy to sit in the Stag Bar at the NCO Club and intertain us with his wit and humor.
I first met Bull some where around Offit AFB IN the late 60`s` or early 70`S. He had a small band and was playing the local Honky-Tonkys. I was running with a bartender/singer better known as "Dirty Sherrly".What a Gal ! Anyway,Bull was playing one nite at the Horse Shoe Lounge.A dive across the highway from Offit ,and Sherrly ask him if she could sit in as a vocalist. Well, ole Bull new a winner when he heard one,and that nite started a long relationship with DS,myself, and Bull.
He went on to buying a saloon and dance hall in Minieola,Iowa, where I tended Bar and Sherrly was the featchered singer ( next to Bull).
In every "Set" she would dedicate a song to unsung Heros of the AF, Boom Operators. And to Me her own Boom.
I entered into the world of soberity in 1973 and lost contact with THE Bull, but heard he was doing well in Nashville,TN,
He lked old Booms and wrote a song about one of the wildest Roscoe Ross, Now with "Boom Stowed" in Paris,TX.
":Hang Down Your Boom Ross Cooly"
THANKS BULL We Grunts loved You
Tricky Dick Hermans an Old Boom of the Old Air Force

Bull Durham along with Bill Ellis, Toby Hughes, Saul Brody, Chip Dockery, and Dick Jonas are not likely to become pop song favorites like the late Michael Jackson, but those who might like a little insight into the life in Vietnam from some heroes who do not pull any punches. Listen closely and you will find REAL life as we knew it back in those days we fought for our unappreciative country. Life got to be a little UNREAL when we came home. Thanks to folks like Vietnam editors these guys may find some of the exposure they so richly deserve. BTW I flew some missions with the 48th AHC and those bluestars deserve some songs about Lam Son 719.

I have had the honor of playing banjo with Bull many times. Sadly we lost him a couple of years ago. Respiratory problems due to exposure to agent orange. He was a good friend ans is sorely missed.

Peace

I've heard some of Lt Col Durham's material on In Country.

His work is outstanding! I've used the album in my high school history classes to give my students a perspective of the war they would not get from their books.
