My late uncle was a rear gunner on SBD's with VMSB-241 on Bougainville. Like many others, he never spoke much of this time. What little I ever learned was tidbits from my father and other uncles. In 1998 at the age of 76, he was awarded the DFC along with four other Marines. I was proud to have been there for that. They are all heroes to me.

in response to Craig Inman's post...I am Jack Cosley's granddaughter through his son Casey Cosley of Costa Mesa, CA. His sister was Orel Jane Cosley and they were from Hood River,OR. Anyway, don't know much about Jack Cosley but my grandmother Reve (his first wife) is still living in CA and I believe his widow is still in NJ. Perhaps one of them could give you more info. You're welcome to contact me as well. kaseycosley@yahoo.com Peace.

Don't know how I got here.

As a boy of 10 in Casa Grande Arizona I knew a man (Freddie ) Fred Daniels. He told me a story of being a rear gunner on what I always thought was a TBM, but maybe not.

They were returning to the carrier and the pilot was shot up, his ear was gone and he could not stop the bleeding. He told freddie that he didn't think they would make it..

Their carrier could not be found. It had been sunk.

Another carrier broke the rules and lit up the deck and they landed with empty tanks and a lot of blood.

I can't remember the carriers names but I have looked it up in the distant past and one carrier was sunk and another did turn on it's lights to allow the returning planes to land..

I do not know if the pilot lived. Freddie had a Harley 94 with all the trim.

My uncle Jack Cosley was also a pilot with vmsb 241 and flew 3rd box under Maj Norris command. However there are literally no mentions of his actions during Midway. He passed in '03 and never talked about his time in battle. Any info would be much appreciated. And my thanks to the greatest generation!

Wow, what an incredible story! Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Thank you for your service to our country. I wish we could learn more about rear gunners in all types of dive/torpedo bombers of ww2. I appreciate you and your squadronmates brave service to our country. God Bless.
