McKinley was a sergeant in the commissary at Antietam, not a Major, but I applaud the author for doing McKinley justice as opposing the war -- if for little else in an overly simplistic book with many careless errors such as missing the Presidents rank.

Spain declared war on us first. We offered them countless opportunities to avoid war, even to purchase Spain's independence. Civil War veteran William McKinley had seen enough blood in battle at Antietam, the deadliest day in U.S. history to this day. He did all he could to avoid war, demanding a calm investigation into the Maine and even brushing off a childish insult to his character included in a secret Spanish dispatch mocking him as a coward for seeking peace. Mr. Thomas has followed an old tradition: Smearing great men and marketing that smear to the uninformed.
