Only 40% of those forced out of the country were illegally present in the US by one estimate (only 20% by another estimate) and most or all could have applied for legal status had they known about or had access to legal counsel...That means we deported hundreds of thousands of US citizens. What is the statute of limitations on lawsuits for this and why on earth are Republicans and some Democrats still wedded to the fantasy of mass deportation or driving out the 10-12 million undocumented immigrants here today?

Indeed this was a good article and helps open our eyes to an immigration challenge that has lasted far longer than our short-sighted society prefers to understand.

Having married a foreigner, I'm well aware of challenges, costs, and humiliation imposed upon those who wish to immigrate to our great nation legally. It was a despicable experience dealing with our immigration service. But in the end, she did this legally, and has been proudly a part of our nation.

What I can not understand is why we EVER have been so willing to accept illegal immigrants so willingly. Sure, it's because we want cheap things so we look the other way so we get cheap labor, and it gets votes for certain politicians. Ultimately, this is demeaning to the immigrant, and our society. Can't we just look far enough down the road to see that illegal immigrants have no motivation to become an American with a broken immigration process, and they continue to be paid in wages and free social welfare? Why can't we agree that the solution is to make our immigration process smoother and more humane, and at the same time make sure those who have broken the federal law by immigrating illegally be removed to their point of origin and get in line legally just as my wife did?

At least Arizona has taken on this approach and they should be lauded for it, not sued using our own tax dollars for something that hasn't happened (racial profiling). Their law clearly restricts the practice and should it happen, then let Arizona deal with it under the watchful eye of our DoJ. I find it distressing that instead of listening to the majority of States, our President is taking counsul and support from nations such as China and Venezuela--both of whom have unmatched records to this day in terms of crimes against humanity.

The simple fact is the combination of our move to a socialist governance and illegal immigration will bankrupt our country both in dollars and what is left of the American culture that saw us through the Depression and two world wars.

They are breaking the law! So are those who employ them! Why are we being selective in enforcing this law? Are we a people who truly believe we are above the jobs these immigrants hold??

Quoting another comment: "Racial prejudice is a reprehensible motive; however, this broad brush should not used to paint those who favor deportation of illegals."

Popular defense, but if you support practices and laws (like the AZ one) that knowingly target people on appearance and will certainly result in racial profiling and lead to racist behavior you cannot use this reasoning to excuse yourself.

While racism and ethnocentrism have no place in civilized society, it's important to make a distinction between fact and opinion.

Racial prejudice is a reprehensible motive; however, this broad brush should not used to paint those who favor deportation of illegals.

May we all learn from history.
