We are within a click of the hill 2 weeks prior. When the Hill broke out we were south in the Ashau outside FB Pike. We heard about the hill and on the 14th of May ran into a giant NVA base camp. That night we had a lot of radio traffic and the Americal div was getting overrun at Tamky. The next day our whole battalion was airlifted to Tamky, the government blacked out all the news since so many people were getting killed. Several in my platoon died in the mountains outside Tamky and Chu Lai during Ham Hill and shortly thereafter.

i don't remember you frank, but i remember ron storm and phil trollinger, and others. honeycutt is still on this planet as well as the co a & d commanders.
anyway i don't really give much credence to who said what we did or what. that's it. we killed the the hell out of 29th NVA ho chi minh's finest.
trail watchers and lrrps counted estimated 1,100 bodies in laos. plus what was on the hill.at night i use to watch the trucks going back and forth from laos to 937 from the battalion cp
the bs news coverage, honeycutt claimed it was headquarters idea. what few men they talked to, they had just walked up the saddle from 937 hot, dirty, exhausted, frustrated, with mud, reaching the top but, i'd be pissed off to. the newspeople never left the battalion cp.

Quite a few inaccuracies here; the battalion after-action report was not particularly accurate, due in part to the large number of Battalion HQ personnel wounded by the friendly fire incidents described above. Zafiri's book is a more reliable source. Also, an Army historical unit recorded oral accounts immedaitely after the battle that contain more accurate information. (I know, because mine was one of them. They are still available.) For one thing, we never wore flack jackets during our assaults. For another, the level of rebellion or unwillingness to fight is greatly exaggerated, if only because it is highlighted. I dare say there has never been a hard battle in the history of the US Army, or any other army, for that matter, which did not produce similar sentiments. As for being "senseless", we never saw the battle as a fight for a piece of terrain; we were after the NVA. It wouldn't have mattered if we'd found them on HIll 937 or along the banks of the Rao Trangh. We went after them and in the end we got 'em.
