I once heard of a captured u-boat where American Intelligence folks pretended to be crew members and wrote to relatives in Germany pretending the u-boat was still operating. I wonder if there is any truth to this story.

I am trying to find a list of the crew that brought the Sub back to the States. My father-in-law, was supposed to be in the crew. His name was Archie V. Victor. We have heard the story many times but cant conform he was on the crew.
Thanks. Garland

My father was on the USS Chatelain at this moment in history and told the story of sharing sleeping space with Germain crew members until they were delivered ashore. He said that the young men that were taken aboard his ship were well treated and all shook hands when delivered ashore. He said they were just young kids like us that got thrown into this war. My dad passed away two years ago, sure wish I had seen these accounts online sooner. Remebering my dad this Memorial Day--John R. Gusler FN 1944-1954.

I have long admired Admiral Gallery for his books and sense of humor. When I learned of his capture of U-505, my admiration increased. Part of the reason for the admiration is that he was ordered to sink U-505 after retrieving the code books and Enigma machine. With a fine sense of history, he refused.

I have read many of Adm Gallery's books and was always intrigued by the capture of the U505. It took a lot of good timing and good luck.
Adm Gallery's books were always well written and the type you could not put down.
