The old vigilante's warning: 3-7-77, the dimensions of the grave that rustlers would be lying in is one of my favourite items of Western lore. I wonder if there is any truth to it? I'd suggest Warren Olofson's "Frontier Cattle Ranching", (2004) which takes a borderlands approach to Norther Great Plains ranching history, and suggests that the idea that the American West was Wild and the Canadian West as well-policed and orderly is in need of revision.
