Reno's position was southeast of the Indian village, not northeast.

It's always made me feel sorry for Reno, trapped in the Seventh between Custer and Benteen . . . .

I disagree with the disparagement of Reno's performance at the Battle of the Little Big Horn above: He had three separate chances to completely throw his battalion away that day--to charge on into the village, to try to hold on in the woods, or to try to withdraw by the same ford he came into the valley across--and he respectfully declined all three invitations to glory.

And his troops were NOT disorganized on (the first) "Reno Hill" at the time Benteen arrived (sans troops).

He was a good field commander but a miserable human being. He just about hated everyone he knew in the army. Read his letters.

Fred Benteen was the example of what leadership is all about. He served his country faithfully without compromising his integrity. Custer let his personal feeling interfer with his judgement and it cost him dearly. Fred was the real hero of the Little Big Horn Battle even if his contemporaries failed to recognize it.
