comparing freddy the bitchin' to lee and/or grant is silly. the prussian position in central northern europe imbedded between france, austro-hungary, western russia, sweeden, and the ocassional invasions by the ottomans and the monguls as well as the cossacks cannot be compared in anyway to a civil war in the sparsely populated north american new world .

Old Fritz was a perfect opportunist in his actions. But that was due to necessity. He transformed Prussia into a major power (both politically and militarily) his oblique order tactics were a thing of beauty in the days of linear warfare. His only "mistake" was to become the acting continental army for the British Crown. He needed the subsidy, but his limited access to manpower would be impossible to overcome versus such large enemies. (see also Adolph Hitler) He knew enough to stop military activities before his nations total destruction.
