While war between Germany & Russia seemed inevitable, hostilities with the U.S. & Britain were not.

Russia sensing the inevitability of conflict with Germany, did not want to get squeezed between the pincers of its two most virulent enemies, Japan & Germany (especially since they signed a co-defense pact). So, it fomented world war (assisted by embedded agents in both Britain & the United States) in order to enlist the aid of others to accomplish what it likely couldn't have done by itself.

Through competent policy & diplomacy, Britain & the U.S. could have sat on the sidelines as Germany & Russia fought themselves to exhaustion & possible collapse.

Might one of them emerged stronger than the other? (You mean like what happened?) Of course, that was a possibility. But it was not a valid reason for intervention.
