My father also served on the USS Dale during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, joining the crew in either 1939 or 1940. I do know that he was aboard when the Dale sailed to Panama prior to the war. His name was William Dancy and I was also wondering if his name came up while researching this book. Growing up I rarely heard him speak about Pearl Harbor and being African-American I think he felt that the contributions of Black sailors were largely ignored and an unwritten part of history.

My grandfather was an officer onboard the USS Dale when Pearl Harbor was attacked. His name was Kenneth Rietman. Did his name come up at all during any research? He rarely talked about the war, but I know he was on the Dale as it escaped the harbor
