His name was Richard T. Schaeffer. This information is from a copy of his service record. He may have been called by the nickname "Schaef". I bought the book about the Dale, but was disappointed not to see his name mentioned at all, anywhere. He told one story I can relate, which was when he was in charge of the menu the men hated it, because he was used to a bland New England diet, unspiced boiled potatoes for instance. I would like to hear from anyone connected to the USS Dale in regard to Ens/Lt. JG/Lt. Schaeffer and his 2 and a half years aboard. I do know that he was aboard when the Dale sailed to Panama prior to the war. His name was William Dancy and I was also wondering if his name came up while researching this book. Growing up I rarely heard him speak about Pearl Harbor and being African-American I think he felt that the contributions of Black sailors were largely ignored and an unwritten part of history.
