my husband was stationed on that Samonian Island in WWII as a corpsman and he was able to get the signatures and predictions from Eddie Richenbacker and crew as to when the war would end. Authentic! Eddie Richenbacker was a favorite of my husband and in later years met Eddie again when he came to Oakland, CA, probably back in the late l970's.

Capt. W.T. Cherry was my mothers 1st cousin. Her mother and Dad were Robert Lee and Mary Ellen Cherry. I had the honor and pleasure of talking with W.T. back in 1986 and 87, back during a period when Reader's Digest issued an article about the Ames, Iowa 6th grade class that did a reserch project on Capt. Cherry and the Crew. I have a lot of the information including the de-classified report of thier landing at sea.

My Dad met Lieutenant John De Angelis some time after the crash in the Pacific Ocean. Dad told me he asked De Angelis about the ordeal. Dad said that De Angelis was very bitter about it. He said that Rickenbacker refused to take the time to replace some of the navigation equipments that may have been damaged in a runway accident (ground loop? If I remember what dad said but I can't be sure.) At any rate, I know that Dad said that De Angelis said that Rickenbacker blamed him and that he, De Angelis thought Rickenbacker was a (Dad's word quoted from De Angelis "prick") I remember this quite clearly because i was doing a report on Rickenbacker for school. I thought Rickenbacker was great but what Dad told me changed my opinion a bit. I don' remember Dad ever using bad language to describe anyone. The word "Prick" stood out at the time and some 47 or 48 years later, still does.
My dad was a navigator 1st Lt Bernard Lobien if you need to know
I believe what Dad said is true...Can you verify any of this?
