I watched the Dennis Weaver movie as a kid and from that I did think he was innocent. However after learning more about his dealings with the assassins. There are too many inconsistencies in his statements to the police. I now believe he did have some knowledge of their intentions. Maybe not that they would actually carry it out, but enough to realise he had to hide his relationship with them when he was questioned. He may have been sympathetic to their cause, though not necessarily in on the actual plot. Which is why when one of them was injured they felt safe going to him. His families assertion that he had to be innocent because he was a doctor is naive and unconvincing. Afterall history is littered with doctors who have committed unspeakable crimes. Dr Mengele and Harold Shipman spring to mind. If he had any notion of their intentions and failed to inform the authorities he was complicit. And if his family have any regard for justice, they'd acknowledge that. A man, who many still see as a great man, died that day. They seem to forget that in their zeal to clear 'their name'. Dr Mudd may have redeemed himself in later life, but he'll never fully escape the shabow of that fateful act.

Get over it--that is a typical response of people who either don't like the facts or prefer faith over reason. It is not true that people are "defaming" Mudd, since one cannot "defame" a dead person. In any event, truth is a defense, and the best defense to such a charge. Moreover, it was members of the Mudd family who have long been unable to "get over it", since it is they who are continually attempting to exonerate him. The question really is, did the facts support his conviction, and if they did, what are the ulterior motives of the revisionists in this matter. To say now that one "believes" Mudd was 'a good man who could not have been involved in the conspiracy' is meaningless and without any foundation. The facts may not be convenient foer his descendants, but what else have we if we want to rise above those who would prefer a Know -Nothing mentality, or a resurrection, in camouflaged fashion, of "the Good Ol' Cause" of Southern (and States') rights. Maybe next they will suggest that slavery wasn't so bad after all.

i think he was guilty because when investigating detectives asked him if he knew who John Wilkes Booth was, he said he didn't know. they also showed him a picture but he still claimed he didn't know who he was. they met just a few months before and a couple times after that to talk about "land". i think he lied!

I believe Dr. Mudd was a good man and had nothing to do with the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln. So what if the Dr. had meetings with Booth, it doesn't mean he planned the presidents death. That would be like saying, if a co-worker and i had lunch and my boss died a week later we were responsible for his death, ridiculous! BTW Dr. Mudd is my great great great grandaddy. So please discontinue the defamation of his good name, you will never know what happened, it is all hear-say. Oh BTW it is 2010, get over it!
