[...] Begreppet ”sabeldans” finns som relaterar till F-100 Super Sabre (och inte F-86). Här är en vida spridd film om en sådan tragisk ”dans” med förklarande text. Ordet gir-roll-koppling nämns men mest i förbifarten. Share this:FacebookGillaGilla [...]

Jack,
You are one of my heroes! The last time I saw you was at Holloman AFB in 1984. We were both flying the mighty AT-38B (ha!). You sold me your old teak rolltop desk that I've used over the years, and I've always been proud to tell who sold it to me. You're a true patriot and warrior pilot. Glad to read this comment from you and find out what happened to you after Holloman. Although this film clip showed a tragic occurrence of the early days of F100 flying, it's amazing that you got to personally see the famous dance. All the best to you!

Hi there.....Cecil was my father's name. He started out in WW 2 as apilot but stigmatism moved him to a wireless air gunner post. He won the DFC amongst many other recgnitions.
I followed by joining the Air Cadet's and obtained two fling scholarships and continued my carreer as a commercial pilot. I'm currently finishing off as a test and evaluation pilot for a Canadian company.
I just thought it interesting that you and my father had the same name.

My brother emailed me this article -something we have discussed over the years, as we both watched this happen, from different locations. I was 12, he was 8 (his note is also in here, following mine).

We lived in the P-Quarters, just east of the "old hospital" on the road to South Base, elevated on a rise south of the runway.. The runway ran west to east, into Rogers Dry Lake at the east end, and the Main Base hangers (including the two that were moved from South Base) were beyond the runway, to the north of us.

I was at the gate at the west end of the South Base road (also elevated above the runway, by a slight rise -and the same gate Bill Holden drives through at the beginning of Towards The Unknown...), standing beside a car when I heard the two F-100's approaching from my left (west). I watched from above as they crossed the north-south highway. I have never forgotten the absolute horror I felt as I watched the one plane touch the runway and then appear to try to lift off nearly straight up -and then fall to the side in a ball of flames. -And have always felt the same everytime I have seen the film.

NOTE- I believe the view of the film is reversed -! The mountains beyond the runway are the Angeles range, which are south of Edwards, and the plane should be landing from the right -not the left. I have seen the films before (in too many commercial films), and until this, the landing has occured right to left -from the west, if looking south. Details............

It was a sad moment that never left me.

As an 8 year old kid, I lived up in the "P" Quarters at Edwards southwest of the runway. I loved watching all the planes at Edwards. I was watching this F-100 coming in to land when I saw it start the dance and subsequent fireball. It was the first plane I ever saw crash. I went on to fly USAF (100 Missions North in Phantoms, POW and 20 years at FedEx) Every time I saw this clip my heart would speed up because I'd actually seen it happen. I'm so very glad to know the whole story behind this. It has really saved lops of lives in jets over the years.

A sad STORY but that is the way we learn We lost a lot of guys in WW11 but learned from their mistakes.
