Also it was very commenplace in 1967 for guys to volunteer for Vietnam. Thousands of guys even volunteered to either extend their tours or re-upped for additional tours. It's funny though, a lot of news organizations have claimed that Sen. Hagel was an officer and led and infantry platoon in VN. Just shows how the mainstream press can screw up a story.
