Kat is full of crap. This is an excellent article and it is factual. This is an article about Black Kettle and the fact that this guy wasn’t the poor sympathetic character that history portrays him as. I knew this but it is great to see an author of many well respected books write an articke on the subject. This points out the fact that Black Kettle and his village wasnt as innocent and guiltless as they want you to believe. Warriors from his band raided, murdered and raped and all this Kat character has to do is do some research. I bet kat believes Little big man is a true story. The bottom line is by letting the warriors come and go as they please to his village (he couldnt or didnt want to stop them) and the people enjoying the plunder the warriors brought back. They led Custer right to the village. What Chivington and his men did afterward was appalling. Both sides did some appalling things which usually happens in war. Did the whites takes their land? Yes, but havent the Indians been doing that to each other for ever. The Lakota was the strongest because they had more people. Whats the difference than what the whites did to them. You live by the sword you die by the sword What happened was inevitable the cultures were two different for example in the Indian culture if you were a good horse thief that gave you great prestige in the tribe in the white culture they hanged horse thieves. what the whites did to the Indian afterward is shameful and disgusting. Giving them terrible land and expecting them to become farmers overnight. Trying to make them become christians and forsaking their own beliefs. In school making the boys cut their hair and forbidding them to speak their own language. making them speak English. Trying to kill their pride. For that we should all be ashamed

I could not even read this entire load of lies — this is the most ethnocentric paper I have yet to read in my entire schorarly career! I cannot believe you were even allowed to publish this. When you speak of Native Americans you can not apply terms to all, different tribes and even different bands must be treated as seperate as different Nations – Black Kettle was a leader of HIS band of Southern Cheyennes (preferrably Tsis Tis Tas but I don’t expect you to know what they call themselves) and as he camped on land assigned to him by the Uniteds states government he and his people were brutually butchered with him waving an American and a white flag in front of the mostly drunken volunteer force led by “Minister” Chivington. Your comments are NOT facts but they would look nice in an opinion column.

Thank you for the facts. My Great Grandfather was John F Buttles, brother in law to Richard Blinn. Clara was my Great Grandmothers Sister. My Greatgrand mother was Sarah Buttles
I had been told this story by my Grandfather many years ago.
It is now nice to see it printed.
