FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL, by Max Brand (Naval Institute Press, 232 pages, $25.95).

Before he headed overseas as a correspondent during World War II, Frederick Faust interviewed members of the 212th Marine Fighter Squadron about their experiences during the 1942 battle for the South Pacific island of Guadalcanal. Publication of the manuscript that resulted from those interviews was delayed by Faust’s assignment to Italy in 1944, and after his death, the manuscript was lost, until a recent meeting between the author’s daughter and the former squadron commander, Brigadier General F. R. Payne, brought it to light. This account–the only work of nonfiction published under the pen name “Max Brand”–is, according to Payne, Faust’s “wartime legacy to his country and to readers worldwide.”
