Classic Jetliners, Motorbooks International, Osceola, Wis., 1994, $15.95 softbound

Many of the classic jetliners that once turned heads as they flew overhead and earned premium gate positions at airports throughout the world have been superseded by aircraft of newer technology. Nevertheless, many of them continue to earn their keep with charter and cargo operators around the globe. Classic Jetliners gives a chapter each to the workhorse Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC-8, and combines trijets and twin jets in separate chapters. A chapter on “Rarities” includes aircraft such as the Convair 880 and 990, the Hawker Siddeley Comet 4, the Vickers VC-10 and Super VC-10, and the Ilyushin Il-62. Classic Jetliners is a nice look back at the airplanes that ushered commercial air travel into the jet age.
