Why did the President send a classified message ordering troops not to carry live rounds. And why is the Marine corp to date teaching new recruits that the reason the bombing happen was due to a marine falling asleep on watch...(which is a out right Lie) I had a young recruit in pensacola florida confront me and told me that's what they are teaching them in boot camp. That made me mad as hell...Marines have more pride than that...I do have the original message stating that troops are not to carry live rounds cause it's a peace keeping expedition...I feel insulted...or betrayed.

I was with MSSG-32 when we first went in. It was a Charlie-Foxtrot from day one. Marines are not meant to, nor are we trained to be peacekeepers. We were in the wrong place, for the wrong reason. Meanwhile Reagan was making deals with the ragheads in iran for weapons from US! Then, after Sept 23, 1983, we did NOTHING to avenge our dead! I firmly believe that our inaction then, and on other occasions after other attacks, led in a straight line to 9/11. If Reagan had done HIS job, I believe the twin towers would still be standing.

As a Beirut Veteran there is much that happened that was not published or reported to the public. I was a member of the original landing force where the "flash bulbs and tv cameras were upon arrival in the port area. I will never forget that day, my parents told me they were eagerly scanning the TV back home for any sign of my exsistance - also the smell was something I have never smelled before.

After settling in after a few days I (2/8 Golf Co.) was housed at the port area. A large building that was used for dock workers with locker rooms and large open shower areas. I was on fire watch in the middle of the day and had marines sleeping on top of lockers, on the deck amongst alice packs, equipment, and various pieces of specialized observation equipment. It was hot and a small breeze was blowing through the room when we were hit by an RPG that blew a nice sized hole in the building. During the confusion and kaos I ran down th aisles of the lockeroom pulling marines off the tops of lockers and getting them to the deck. Smoke and dust filled the room with a smell of spent gunpowder.

Also some thing that went unreported was while I was on guard duty in side the port area, myself and another marine PFC Stanley Bastien were fired upon during a routine guard posting. We had to find cover behind a bus bench. We were not allowed to chamber any rounds or install any magizines in our weapons. (Only guard duty personnel were issued ammo - When one Marine came off duty, they handed the magizines to the next guys coming on duty. After counting the rounds, you had to store them on your mag holders on your web gear.) We could not ID the direction or source of the gun fire, I just wanted to get the hell out of there alive. We ran back to the barracks and reported the incident, nothing ever came from it.

I truly believe that if I or my fellow marine could have identified the shooter that day at the port in Beirut, I would have performed my duty as a United States Marine and probably made international headlines.

I was injured in Beirut in the airport area while on a special security detail guarding airwingers while they scavenged and recovered parts and pieces from a large burnt and abandoned air plane.

I limp everyday thinking of about the difference I made in the world...

I believe that as the US government deploys Marines and other armed forces around the world in a police action capacity, the Marines mentally will develop a jaded attitude similar to that of big city police forces. Being constantly on guard, in self preservation mode regarding muslims, they can't help but see a jihadist in virtually every muslim they encounter just as big city police start to see a scumbag perp in every face they encounter. This is most unfortunate for the good intentioned muslim people around the world. Next time you board a flight along with a muslim or arab attired passenger take note of the other passenger's reactions. Human nature is human nature and I fear that the friction between westerners and Middle East muslims is only going to get worse. Personally I would rather be viewed as prejudicail than find a building on my bunk like our brother marines did in Beirut in 1983 or any of the other incidents more recently done by radical muslims.
