It is a terrorist attack no matter how you look at it.... People who are there to help your country, your government, your people, and have done no overt acts of war, are not an invading force. The force was placed there to keep the peace and allow nation building to begin.... Anarchists and religeous leadership did not want that to happen, because it would take away their power over the population..... Terrorism is the result. Terror bombing is nothing more than terrorism at its deepest hateful core... JP & rest in peace brothers for you deserve Gods Love.

"for the nation, it was the worst act of terrorism against Americans up to that time. In hindsight, it was a harbinger of what was to come."

"Beirut was the first major attack in what has now become World War III,” observed Bob Jordan, who in 1992 founded the Beirut Veterans of America."

-----

These kind of ignorant statements are of no help.

Other than th fact that both were carried out by Arab Muslims, the two attacks have nothing in common.

The Beirut attack cannot be classified as a "terrorist attack" as it was an attack against an unwelcome foreign force by native militants.

Had the Beirut attacks come here to America and attacked American civilians, then yes the comparisons would make sense, but otherwise no. Calling the Beirut attack a "terrorist attack" is like calling attacks against American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan today also "terrorist attacks".

At one point can a people attack a foreign invading or intervening force without being called "terrorists"?

Great article. We must remember our armed forces are not designed as peacekeepers. Rather their purpose is to break things and kill people. Leave the policing to civilian forces.
