My Grandfather was James Benjamin French. born March 21, 1892. He married Grace Stults in 1916 in Orongo, MO (or IL). They had 2 children, James Benjamin Jr. and Robert Edward French. He founded Black Hills Power & Light Company in Rapid City, South Dakota. He moved to Scotsdale, Arizona and died in August 1978. He was from a family of eight kids and was the oldest. He was said to have put all of his siblings through college, but only had a 4th grade education. I remember hearing the name Mattie and/or Effie (his sisters?). His father's name of Oliver French is listed with the Masonic Lodge.

Hope someone can help me.

Is there a website with the genealogy for this line of French Family? We have been searching for Jasper French who, according to grand-daughter Ruby, says knew Belle Star. He was in these same areas at these times. He was in Denton Texas, where he killed a teacher there over his boys. Then moved into the indian territory. And was in Haskell County, then Stonewall, and Matoy. He was born in Missouri. And one son is James. Perhaps a cousin?

I haven't visited this site in a while. First, Amy you probably are related. The children by French's second marriage were Sherman, Lila or Lilly, and May. Email me at mtower@hughes.net for detail.
Second: Jim, if you are related to James K. French, you are not a relative of Big Jim French. James K. was far too young to have been Big Jim. Jim K. was an interesting character and I've yet to see an in depth article on him.

Hi,
This story is so interesting. And I thank Mike Tower for writing it. I have looked for my great, great, grand father for years, but there were no leads. How can someone be so invisible?...Well, after reading this story, and doing some research, it seems very possible, that Big Jim French is my gggrandfather. My grandmother, Lilly Lee French was raised by some of the Fishers. And we did not know much about her past. But, if her father was an outlaw, it all makes sense.
Thanks for the story, it gave me so many leads!

Do you know when Steven (Dirty Steve ) Stephens left New Mexico and headed to Denver? Also,do you know the calliber of his gun. I may have his saa 44/40 that he either purchased or stole after Dec. 9th, 1880.I think he may have killed three people with it.
