Few will argue that Arnold made wise decisions regarding his treason. But as the article pointed out his actions from the spring of 1775 and the fall of 1777 were vital in delaying the Brits at Valcour Island, showing them a grit and determination that they did not expect at Quebec, and at Saratoga, defeating them in the decisive battle in the war. There is no doubt that his leadership in battle led to the victory at Saratoga. I have always wondered whey Arnold is so thoroughly villified while confederate generals Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson and others are viewed as honorable heroes fighting for the southern cause. After reading extensive about Arnold I can honestly say that I disagree with his ultimate decisions but I also understand why he made them.

Arnold's list of accomplishments were quite impressive through 1777 in the Revolutionary War. Perhaps no other officer had done so much for his country in that time and his efforts in the Saratoga campaign did help lead to victory there. That victory led to France's entrance in the war, which ensured that no peace would be made without an independent United States. So you can argue that Benedict Arnold did save America.

At the national park marking the battlefield, there is a monument to Arnold, but without his name. It shows a boot with a bullet hole in it.
The ranger at the visitors' center was irritated when I asked him how to find the anonymous monument.

They put a wooden hip cast on Arnold's leg, and he just had to lie there for two months. Two months of that agony twisted the mind of a man of action.
