The Continentals won. By taking Stony Point, the Continentals discouraged the English from their plan to deny Washington the sanctuary and travel along the Hudson Highlands. The English left the area and went off to pillage and loot Connecticut. Sergeant Samuel Stowell of the 3rd Connecticut Line was among those in the right column which attacked Stony Point. Like all who attacked Stony Point, Stowell was selected from his unit based on his fighting spirit, fighting skills, and his strong commitment to the Revolution. Other than the battle of Stony Point, Stowell fought in every battle at which General Washington was present during the Revolutionary War. Stony Point was considered too dangerous to risk the possible capture or death of General Washington. Generals Washington and Wayne studied Stony Point together from the cover of nearby mountains. General Wayne was appointed to lead this bold battle and because of the high discipline and training of his soldiers, delivered a shock to the English when his attacking troops took the fort. The English had previously believed that Stony Point was more secure than Gibraltar.

Stoney Point was probably one of the most inspirational actions of the Rev War for the American cause. Too often I hear comparisons of "Mad" Anthony Wayne to Gen. Patton. It seems silly. Wyane knew the power of the bayonet having suffered at the hands of "No Flints" Grey at Poali two years before. In a sense he had to redeem his laxness for that debacle. The American Light Infantry were probably the closet thing we possessed to a Corps d'Elite on the British model. It seems surprising that Washy disbanded them not long after this occasion returning the men to their weakend units.
