I believe the only major route out of the bridgehead surrounding Kustrin went through the heights, making it essential to attack there. Tony LeTissier who wrote Zhukov at the Oder, could tell you more. That book deals extensively with the fighting in that sector. He is a really nice guy, returns emails, etc. If you contact him and hear from him, please post what he says on this blog.

I have always personally felt that historians have neglected the actions that took place in the 3rd Panzer Army's sector. I find some references to the actions there, but nothing in the detail available for the 9th Army sector and the battle for Berlin itself.

I have a "dumb" question . . . why did the Soviets have to assault Seelow Heights directly? They controlled the entire front, couldn't they just sidestep the Heights and still reach Berlin?

This is a totally inaccurate account and I would like to know the author's references. I don't know where to start, but the battle for the Seelow Heights did not start until April 16, and the first attacks were against the 9th Army and not the 3rd Panzer Army. Plus, the 56th Panzer Corps defended the Heights, not Manteuffel's units. These attacks were also directed by Zhukov, not Koniev, whose attacks took place to the South of the heights, mostly against the 4th Pz. Army. Where are the authors references? A good place to start with the true history based on factual information would be "The Last Battle" by Cornelius Ryan, and "Zhukov at the Oder, the decisive battle for Berlin" by Tony LeTissier.

This is, I'm afraid, a completely wrong account. The attack on the Seelow Heights commenced in the early hours of 16th April 1945 and the heights were secured by Zhukov's troops, not Koniev's, on 19th April. Separately, Koniev's attack 'unhinged' the flank of the German defensive line south of the Seelow Heights. As a starting point, I suggest you look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Seelow_Heoights

Nicely written, however I am surprised nobody bothered to edit it. If they had they would find it a historical mess.
Dates, locations, names etc etc are just plain wrong.

Caution to anyone attempting to use this piece as research

There are problems. Prinz Eugen was in Slovenia/Yugoslavia, when the war ended (during time of Berlin) and Wiking was in Austria. Does not fit to have elements of these units fighting in Berlin.
