hindsight is of course fantastic, although I would say looking back at the development of Britain since the battle of the boyne, I think the positives ( for all ) far outweigh the negatives. Of course William III had an agenda, he wouldn't have been the successful statesman he was otherwise, he wasn't winging it, he was manipulating and shaping the future. the point i'm making is you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, but ultimately, this country has come on leaps and bounds since.

ohhhhh how hindsight does bend the few of history, the Boyne would not cause Jacobite Ireland to go quietly into the night. A untrained force (with 3 regiments that were left in England, rapparees and some regiments being disbanded by Tyroconnell due to lack of resources) vs a European veteran army has the Williamite cause tied up for ‘three years of war in Ireland cost in excess of six million pounds'. Jacobite Ireland would further to enlist for the armies of France and Spain. William came to England of the fear of a Catholic English monarch who looked to copy that of his cousin Louis "the sun king". If England entered the war on the side of the France, William would have to face the largest land power (France) and the largest naval power (England). The question also come to mind what of the Irish Protestant Jacobites? This is just a popular history, i would at the revival of Jacobite studies and look to a three kingdom and European approach to the conflict.

"you Orangemen are as stupid and pigheaded as you are abusive and destructive."

Either this person is stupid or he is pretending to be stupid! In the same sentence he calls Orangemen "stupid and pigheaded" and "abusive!" As the good book says, "First take out the mote that is in your own eye."

That's a laugh.

You can't apply 21st century conceptions of democracy and freedom to the 17th century!

Basically, James represented French-style absolutist monarchy and the divine right of kings.

William represented a constitutional monarchy, tempered by and ruling in accordance with the rules of a democratically elected parliament.

If you want to know how that played out, compare England's social and political developments in the 18th century to France's, especially circa 1789.
