"im in 8th grade too, and this was no help:( i need facts, not myths!" Oh boo hoo, cry me a river or better yet get some cheese with that whine. What you need is a lesson in grammer and punctuation and that's a fact and no myth.

I am a civil war buff who is studying up on Shiloh for a planned trip to the Park. I thought this was an outstanding article for anyone who knows the basic facts of the battle but who wants to explore the controversies that still exist. This article dispels many of the myths.

I get the sense that this was the last "amateur" battle of the war. Never again would any troops advance in lines of divisions, like the Confederates did (and which I suspect may be the main reason they did not win). And never again would troops fail to entrench, like the Union did.

The real story of this battle is the rise of the team of Sherman and Grant. Although taken by surprise, they won the battle by keeping their men in the fight, which demonstrates their leadership and fighting character.

The final unanswered question is what would have happened if Albert Sidney Johnson had lived. Grant criticized Johnson in his memoirs. But he does note that every general on the Union side who knew Johnson believed he would prove the greatest Confederate general. So did Confederate President Davis, who, do not forget, was U.S. Secretary of Defense, knew all of the major military men on both sides, and who picked out Lee.

But this is a great article. Sorry kids if it is over your heads. But keep up the good work on your papers!!

This was an excellent piece, full of facts and very descriptive. As a combat veteran, I'll tell you this is what a battle is like. It is confusion with all of the hammers of hell going. Your ability to communicate with subordinate units and supporting units is limited and difficult with modern radios. It was nearly impossible to maintain coherent communications and control of engaged infantry and artillery in a Civil War battle. The wonder is they did so well.

We should never lose sight of the fact that all Americans are heirs of the men who showed such valor and dedication on both sides in this terrible war. Theirs is a most remarkable record.

Prentiss spent a lot of time defending himself to critics who printed(Detroit Free Press, among others) that he surrendered at 10 am. And He was the ranking Officer at the Hornets Nest if you count his time in the Illinois militia. His service against the Mormans happened in 1844 in Illinois, following the murder of Joseph Smith and his brother. Also let's not forget that Grant had ordered Prentiss to hold that position. I think Wallace deserves more credit than he received but not at the price of belittling Prentiss' contribution. They both should receive the Medal of Honor for their actions. Peabody and Prentiss were from the same town and surely knew ech other. Also Prentiss had just assumed comand 5 days prior to the battle and Sherman was responsible for the layout of the divisions encamped there.
