Hello, my Uncle served on the LST 779 and sent a letter home describing the invasion of Iwo Jima. If you would like a copy of it for your files I will forward it to you for your files if you give me instructions.

Sincerely,
Thomas J Kayser

Just stumbled on your comment on Marvin Peterson. I have look on and off for more information about him. I see he was your dad's best friend. My dad Charlie Anderson was his neighbor in Linn Grove, Iowa. I have been to Marvin's grave many times as my uncle and grandparents are buried in the same cemetery. As Marvin has no living relatives I always wondered more about him. We would visit his parents in Iowa when we went there on vacation. I think they died in the 70's. My father was in the honor guard that met the train in 1947 that carried his body on the final leg of the trip from Iwo Jima.

I believe the Marine who borrowed the flag was Lieutenant Tuttle, according to James Bradley in "Flags of Our Fathers".

My father, Private George F Leath of Fort Payne Alabama was one of those Marines with that 155 howitzer battery. Unlike his best friend PFC Marvin "Mike" Peterson of Iowa , my father left the island and lived 60 more years. Mike had less than 48 hours left to live when he got off the 779. He was the only child of a WW 1 veteran and his wife.
