My uncle Pvt. John J. Lacoma #31416084 (spelled his last name with a c) was wounded at Normandy on July 14, spent 3 months in the hospital, rejoined his unit, and was killed Dec,2,1944 in Belgium. He was part of the 8th. Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Company C. He is buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery. I believe he was killed in the Hurtgen Forest. I wish I could find more information about him but haven't had much luck. Any information about the battle in the Hurtgen Forest would be appreciated.

My Father (then Major) Frank P. Burk commanded the 2/12th Inf. from Utah Beach to the end of the War and fought in the Hurtgen campaign. He retired in 1968 as a full Colonel and passed on in 1978, winning a Silver Star, Bronze star with 2 clusters and numerous other ribbons for his service in WWII, The Phillippines and Korea.

[...] While the National World War II Memorial is a monument for the ages, we are lucky that some of the people it honors are still around to talk about that time. Herman said he was a sergeant in the US Army during World War II and had landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He also fought in the Hurtgen Forrest, which became infamous because the nearly impenetrable and fiercely defended terrain had essentially no strategic value. History of Hurtgen Forest [...]
