I enjoyed the article. My direct ancestor, great great grandfather, had two brothers that were in the 47th Alabama. One was a Lt and was killed in battle at Gettysburg while his younger brother was captured and died in prison camp at Ft. Delaware. My family lost two sons from the Gettysburg campaign. What I do not know is did the two brothers that were in Company B actually fight in the attack on Little Round Top. The article indicates that 7 companies from the 47th were with the 15th Alabama.

I understand the tactical advantage in taking Little Round Top for the Confederacy It was a tactical blunder by Lee. He should have used all his resources on Cemetery Ridge to split the Union. This was a common tactic by all Armies at that time. The Pickett Charge was a success if only he had not ran out of bodies. Those soldiers that were lost in the Little Round Top battle could have been used in support of Pickett Charge and out numbered the Union. Pickett did break throught temporely but had to fall back due to his lost resources. You do not attact an enemy up hill and so protected as Little Round top. Lee was a great General for the south and he was in command of a superior fighting force as was demonstrated by the Little Round Top battle. The Southern soldier were truly a much better fighting unit. They almost won that battle. They were exausted but belived in there General, but this time General Lee made a great tactical error which cost him the battle at Gettysburg. General Lee lost the war and the cause due to that one tactical blunder.

It could be that in his report Chamberlain was merely describing the hill on which he fought.

I watched Gettysburg (1993) on a DVD tonight and saw the defense of Little Round Top. One concern I have is that Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels) carried his scabard on his left hip and in the bayonet charge led with his saber in his right hand. In all other scenes of the defense, he fired his pistol with his left hand. Was Chamberlain ambidextrous or was this a characteristic of Jeff Daniels?
