Miss Mildred as we called her was my teacher at the convent school in Columbus from 1966-1969 and seemed to be one of the most intelligent people I've ever encountered. There were always rumors about her at school but it seemed always to be surrounded in mystery. She was fluent in many languages and spoke of Shakespeare as if she knew him. She seemed very lonely and kept to herself most of the time, but I lived in the same house with her for 3 years. I will soon be 60, but still think about her a lot and wish my children could have met her.

I grew up in Columbus, OH not far from where Milldred Gillars stayed in the convent. I was a child at the time, but I remember the drama in her voice when she spoke. It wasn't until I was in high school that my mother told me what she was famous for. I’m looking forward to reading Richard Lucas’s book “Axis Sally The American Voice of Nazi Germany”.

[...] From the deserts of North Africa to the Normandy beaches, GIs listened to the sensual voice of an American woman broadcasting over the radio for Nazi Germany. The voice, alternately seductive and condemning, wondered aloud if their wives and girlfriends were “running around” with the 4-Fs back home, and gently pointed out the benefits of surrender. As the men tried to imagine the mysterious beauty behind the microphone, the swing music she played kept them tuning in. She cultivated a persona of worldly allure, ready to welcome the boys and understand their troubles. [Read More] [...]

Rita Zucca, my second cousin, continues to be defamed despite efforts by my family for many years to clear her name. Your entry with regard to her Rome activities is wrong. Rita Zucca worked for the government run RAI radio station during the war, in Rome. She did not broadcast propaganda, but sang mostly Amerian tunes to the Gi's. The Rome station picked up Mildred Gillars propaganda transmissions from Berlin and relayed them on to the front. Rita Zucca was never accused of broadcasting propaganda. The Italian Badoglio government later accused and tried her for collaboration on the basis of her employment with RAI during the war.
