I'm sure I could find a lot of people who were there that should be mentioned. This is not a full history of the battle, basically a synopsis.

Raul, this story is about the 54th Massachusetts assault on Battery Wagner, not specific people that may have been involved. I'm sure I could find a lot of people who were there that should be mentioned. This is not a full history of the battle, basically a synopsis.

The record of the 54th Mass. shows that the black soldiers were indeed every bit as brave, steadfast and skilled as were the white soldiers of the day, no more, no less. Too bad prejudice remained strong in this country through WWII. The experience of the men of the Red Tail Squadron is an example of both the ongoing prejudice, coulpled with the skill and ability of its members. My 19th Century New England ancestors were abolitionists, but too few listened in the decades that followed. Furthermore, white America really let the freed slaves down. Freedom was a hollow gift, without education, job and skill training, and credit for homes and business. As a result, too many generations of blacks were unable to develop useful skills and middle class values. As a result, II grew up in Cincinnati in the 1930's and 40's and most white people still though blacks were inferior! Fortunately it looks like most intelligent white Americans have finally learned better.
