What a horrible generalization. The killing of thousands of civilians cannot be sanctioned by saying that they got what they deserved. My family lived through the Hamburg firestorm and my grandfather neither gased women and children, nor was he a Nazi party member. The bombing of German cities during WW2 constitutes a war crime because it deliberately was meant to kill civilians. They were not collateral damage, they were the target!

i was born in hamburg left at age 3 due to the nazi regime. they all got what they deserved for their inhumane treatment of human life. i have no thoughts on feeling sorry for a bunch of lunatics that enjoyed gasing women and children . who knows i might have had a nice life in hamburg, but thank god that i am an american . who would think to sentence the allies when they fought back against the nazis that started this they should have done the same as they did in hamburg to every other german city, after all these years that is my opinion

Excellent article. My daughter and grandsons live in Hamburg. It is such a beautiful city. I wanted to know what happened to it during the war. Just unbelieveable the firestorm that killed so many. All those buildings gone. When I go there I look at the old ones that are still standing, lots of the new ones were made to look like the older styles. Just is really something to see what happened. Thank you again for such a excellent article, explained so much.

I just read this wonderful article on the Hamburg bombing and I am wondering if anyone knows more about this bombing as to the destruction of the Univerisity of Hamburg's Bookstore?

I know 63,000 citizens were helped by the students, but if anyone knows of this bombing or can lead me to links on it, it would certainly be appreciated.

Minor Detail regarding Window/Radar.
The metallic strips were 'tuned by length to match the latest known frequencies used-thus with 10cm radar on the ground and, say 3cm radar in the pathfander aircraft the AIRBORNE radar was unaffected.

(We still used Window in the 1960's ! The Navigation Bombing System Mk.!A used on the 'V' bombers was STILL 3cm.)
