Hi, my dad is 93 now. He was an Observer on the Illustrious, flying the Swordfish. I am still fascinated as to how he survived this period in the War. He was reported missing in action, two days before he turned up on his mothers doorstep, my grandmother.

He was more traumatised by her re-action to his safe return, than his spell on the ship.....which he relished. Is there anyone who has any information on where and what dates my dad had been flying in. He has lost his memory, and all we have is a lot of photos, but not many real dates......appreciated.

In his popular and influential 1942 book "Victory Through Air Power", Alexander P. de Seversky uses this attack by Stukas on HMS Illustrious several places throughout the book as an example of the vulnerability of aircraft carriers. After four decades of studying the military history of the World Wars, I posted an essay online about Seversky's book (including this incident) at http://www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net/studies/VTAP.htm
thanks
