My grandfather, Edward Woelm, flew the Skyraider during the Korean War and he always spoke highly of the aircraft. After he passed, I found some interesting films in his house which I had transferred to digital. One film depicts carrier operations aboard the Bon Homme Richard and the other is gun camera film from his Skyraider. I suggest you check them out.

I first worked on the AD-5 while in H&MS-33 at El Toro. We had 2 AD's, one was a 5 and the other was a 4na. I used to fly in the AD-4na in order to get my flight pay. Several times I flew in the AD-5 from El Toro to NAS Sand Point in Seattle. Four of us used to take the trip. MSGT Woodring was the pilot, GYSGT Maiberger in the right seat and myself and a SSGT from supply rode in the back. We would fly from El Toro to McClellend AFB, then to Larson AFB, and then to Sand Point.

I later worked on AD's while in VMA-121 in Iwakuni, Japan. Fantastic aircraft, I absolutely loved them.

As one who had the privelage of knowing Ed Heinemann personally, and therefore I am not exactly unbiased, I would rate the Skyraider as one of the best attack aircraft ever built and certainly the best piston-engined version. In respect of its performance, versitility, load-carry capability, carrier compatability and longevity, it certainly took some beating. Only the de Havilland Mosquito comes close to meeting these criteria.

To Clint Johnson: Bill Byrne was a Marine AD pilot and the husband of Jane Byrne a one-time mayor of Chicago. As you said, he died in an aircraft accident at NAS Glenview. I served in the Marines with Bill Byrne. Do you know anything more about his accident?

The Skyraider was indeed a great aircraft... perfectly designed for the role in which we in the USAF employed it. I have developed a two-part website devoted entirely to the Skyraider. My A-1 Skyraider Combat Journal chronicles my 138 combat missions in Southeast Asia. Have a look at http://skyraider.org and drop me a note.

In 1968,eleven years after the last A-1 rolled off the production line, the Department of Defense gave serious consideration to restarting production of the A-1.Unfortunately,this was considered cost-prohibited.

The first flight of the Skyraider was 3/18/1945 not 3/19. Not
mentioned was the long use of the A-1 by the South and later
North Vietnamese Air Forces. Also, the USAF flew A-1s in the
VN theatre from '61 to '75. The french operated them from
carriers and used them extensively in Africa. The Swedes
used them as target tugs (these aircraft comprise most of the
civilian owned A-1s in the U.S.). Not much mention of the
AD-5 (A1E) which was used extensively as an AEW aircraft,
target tug and rescap aircraft. The last U.S. military service
A-1 was an A1E operated by the USMC at Quantico. For Joseph
vol pendesta: maybe you remember that Mayor Jane Byrnes'
husband was killed at NAS Glenview in an AD-5 in the fifties.

I remember as a young pup, seeing the AM-1 Maulers that had been sent to Glenview NAS outside of Chicago about 1950ish. The Patrol Squadron at Glenview was still flying PBYs. The Maulers were eventually replaced by ADs in the reserve units.
