A good book for understanding Middle East conflict?

Can you please recommend a good book, fiction or non-fiction, to explain how the Middle East got so complicated and violent? I’m trying to look at different aspects of the conflict, but need to get it from one source. Thanks for any assistance, Mr. History!!

Dear Tom,

Well, for starters you might derive some conclusions about the origins of numerous Middle Eastern troubles by reading the Old and New Testaments and the Koran. A more recent military history might be Holy War: 3,000 Years of Battles in the Holy Land, by longtime Military History contributor Gary Rashba.
