God bless you and your uncle and I am sorry for your loss. It is sad that you did not get to know your uncle better. He was a brave man. America's forces were woefully unprepared for conflict in Korea: Not enough ammunition, improper anti- tank weapons and rounds, and a total lack of consideration on the battle hardened nature of the enemy they were facing. They did not even have proper maps of the country. T. R. Fehrenbach's book: This Kind of War, tells it all. I served a year in Korea, got shot at near the DMZ, almost drowned during a fording, and made a wrong turn and nearly drove into North Korea. Someone else had blessed me too.

Yes, Pvt. Kenneth Shadrick , was the first to die in that kind of war. The soldiers dubbed it the "unknown" war after the News reported it as just a police action. The politicians in Washington then called it the "forgotten war", a very poor choice- for that Korean War was, in fact, the Second Korean War. Three American soldiers died in military action on Korean soil in 1871 during the First Korean War- The truly "Forgotten War"!
